‘but you don’t. you’re a spy, not a soldier. now you want to wade into a war. what did loki do to you?’AND HER FACE, SHE’S CONFUSED, BECAUSE LOKI DIDN’T DO ANYTHING TO HER. LOKI DID SOMETHING TO CLINT.
‘i got compromised,’ she says by way of explanation. clint is the compromise. love is for children and when she was a child she was already a spy but he saw something in her worth saving and made a different call. he’s a soldier who went against orders to save a spy. they’re both master assassins but have different ways of doing it, different loyalties. he’s loyal to a cause and she’s loyal to herself. and to him. and to him.
so now she’d fight a war to avenge him even though he made it out on the other side because she’s been him. she knows what it’s like to be unmade and now their scars match up. everyone else is after avenging humanity and she’s after avenging one. single. man. ’your world in the balance,’ loki says, ‘and you bargain for one man.’ because there is red in her ledger and it is dripping and she will never, ever be able to pay it back and that’s okay and it doesn’t matter because he’s not asking her to. he could absolutely kill her slowly and intimately because he knows all the things that scare her, all the things no one else is supposed to know, all the weak points in her and he’s the weakest one. even spies need someone to tell their secrets to and he’s that person, you can tell just from the way he fucking looks at her jeremy renner you piece of shit.
i also love how in that loki scene because “You lie and kill in the service of liars and killers. You pretend to be separate, to have your own code. Something that makes up for the horrors. But they are a part of you, and they will never go away.”
and so she thinks that in her debt she’s compromising (COMPROMISING) her past and she thinks that saving one man is going to wipe years of blood off her past when she fully knows that’s an excuse and can never happen
one man when regimes fall every day and she doesn’t give shit about it because hawkeye is her morals he is the source of that which makes her vulnerable but is also her greatest spy because she was trained to lie through her teeth but clint is something that got under her skin and stayed there and he is a debt she will always have to repay she can never fully repay him so he just stays there just like the rest of her but she doesn’t ever feel guilty about it like the rest of her crimes
and it’s clint that does make her separate but it’s also clint that makes her compromised; she’s avenging him but she’s avenging herself because he’s a part of her and i just
